The New Job

I am going to try to give as many details about the new job as I can while at the same time preventing a dooce incident.

As already stated the job is in NYC. The Greenwich Village area to be more specific. I will be working support on a regional level, which is not too much different then what I am doing now. A lot more laptop users (developers) and a lot less desktop users. The technical ability of all users is higher than average as well. Any problems that should come my way will be professional problems! 😉

There are some side projects that will have me working with developers. Although not my primary responsibility, my predecessor made a name for himself designing environments for the Dev group to use. As was explained to me (by him), it is a role that appears to be expanding. Honestly, my coding skills never really graduated from HTML, so I am a little nervous about it. However, I know I can do it and learn it. I am hoping that the work environment will be more conducive to advancing my programming knowledge as well.

The job has some geek perks also. It has strong connections with MS so I have the opportunity to Alpha and Beta test software. I have also been told that the technical community inside the company is absolutely amazing. Things that the folks at my first job dreamed about implementing (had it ever become profitable) are standard things here. In all honesty, I’m really excited to see this and be a part of a honest to goodness technology company!

Outside of the that I am not going to get anymore specific. Those that would like more info can drop me a line and we can chat.

During the interview process I just had a really good vibe from the people I talked with (including other support folks) and the opportunities this place has are amazing. For the first time since I took the full on plunge into IT, I feel that I am getting with a good company that is really and truly going to advance my career. I really, really hope I am right on this one! 😉

On a final note, I think that the commute (via public transportation) and the fact that I will be in NYC, might just give me a chance to expand on a pet project of mine; to make this blog more than just funny links and bitching. I am hoping that this opportunity will push me to expand my writing and make it more prolific. Once again, here’s to hoping!

That’s about it. Thanks to the folks that left congratulatory comments in the last post. Like I said, if you have anymore questions, hit me up or ask me to drop you a line.

One of the reasons I’m careful about what I write on my blog is that I know people in the office read it… Last thing I want is HR to come wandering down 🙂 It’s always “doom’s day” when somebody from HR is in our office.

Congrats on the new job. Would be interested to hear about all the fun projects they’ll task you with. I should give you an update about here. Shame you’re not here too, we could do with the extra hands now.

Oh, I’ll be moving your blog soon to a new, better, faster, more stable server… so here’s to hoping it gets more stuff on it too 😉

    Hey Angliss,

I’m guessing you speak of your office’s experience specifically with HR folks. HR people are just misunderstood. They’re not “bad guys”. They’re just doing their job. However, if their job involves a lot of layoffs, they can certainly be perceived that way.

    Wessa,

Our HR staff themselves aren’t too bad, and I’ve been to lunch with one of them a few times. You just know something bad is coming when they’re in the local office.

Hmm… this does not bode well for the DJ’s and my plan to get you and your roommate to relocate to our fair capital city. Oh, well! It sounds like a great opportunity- congratulations!
