DMV: Third Time’s a Charm

I need to goto the DMV to get a new license since I am now a resident of Connecticut. Fair enough. First time I go, only about two weeks after arriving, I forget my second form of ID (my passport) so obviously they cannot do anything for me. The funny thing is, before I left the house I held my passport in my hand and thought to myself ‘do I need this?’ I chose…poorly.

So I go this morning to try again. I arrive 30 minutes early and I end up being the first in line at the appropriate counter once they unlock the doors. I have all my ducks in a row (2 forms of photo ID, the correct form filled out, money, current bill to show residency), and the fucking system crashes out. Hangs at this one screen for like 5 minutes. So they finally tell me, after I have been there for a half hour, that it doesn’t look like it’s gonna happen anytime soon. They have no ETA on when it will be fixed and no idea whether or not it will last 10 minutes or all day. So they give me a ‘pass’ that will let me cut to the front of the line next time I am there. That’s great and all, but the next chance I have for getting there isn’t until Saturday morning. And there aren’t any signs saying ‘If you have a pass, you may goto the front of the line’ and the automatons working the counter NEVER say anything about it either. So I am supposed to convince the other people, who want to be there as much as they want a root canal, that my ‘pass’ means I get to go before them? Yeah, right! I wouldn’t believe me either.

And don’t even get me started on the hoops me and the wife have to go through to get our cars registered. Because, you know, we look like hardened car thieves, don’t we?
