It seems that it is still the drinking that’s the problem and not the gaming! 😉

The 5th of November

Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I can think of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t’was his intent
To blow up the King and Parli’ment.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England’s overthrow;
By God’s providence he was catch’d
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!

Required Summer Reading

I have several books that are now on the “R&R Required Summer Reading List”. They are all excellent books and I encourage everyone to read them.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman
Neil Gaiman is the creator of the DC/Vertigo graphic novel Sandman. I cannot type words that would give justice to this amazing book. Trust me, you’ll like it.

Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore
This book chronicles the childhood friendship of Levi (Biff) and Jesus. It’s a great read that tries to tell the story of Jesus, minus the seriousness of the Messiah. It is a work of fiction, and it is hilarious. I highly recommend this book

Star Wars: Legacy of the Force by Multiple Authors
After the New Jedi Order Series and the atrocities that were Episodes I-III I gave up on Star Wars. I was so burned out on it that I couldn’t handle anymore. George had taken the core of my being and turned it into plush toy Jar Jar Binks garbage. It’s like he tried to squeeze every last piece of coin out of that money making machine, and in the process, kick all the fans in the ‘mean bean machine‘.

Last year though saw a slight return to the beauty of the Star Wars expanded Universe that existed before George went batshit crazy and started making the prequel movies. The book series Legacy of the Force was created and comic series Star Wars: Legacy was created. Continuing the stories of the Solos and the Skywalkers in the book series and then following the Star Wars universe 100 years into the future with SW:Legacy. It all ties in together and it’s actually pretty good. I read the whole book series in a few months. So if you are in the mood for some Star Wars that doesn’t involve the whining of Anakin (thank god he became Vader….cause if he kept whining like that I was gonna kill him) check out these books and comics.

World War Z by Max Brooks
I have mentioned this before. I suggest the audio book (for it’s all-star cast). It’s a good listen, and it makes you wonder…..would you survive?

The Harry Potter Books by J.K. Rowling
Stop belly-aching and just read them. I don’t care if you’re not into fantasy, if they offend your religious beliefs or even if you think they are children’s books. These books are none of those things and so much more. Better yet listen to the Audio versions which are done by an amazing voice actor, Jim Dale

That’s what I have spent my summer reading….that and The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and Wired Magazine….but none of those are required reading….just good.

I’ll be expecting a book report from each of you on one of these subjects to be handed in to me by the End of September.

New York

There are roughly three New Yorks. There is, first, the New York of the man or woman who was born there, who takes the city for granted and accepts its size, its turbulence as natural and inevitable. Second, there is the New York of the commuter — the city that is devoured by locusts each day and spat out each night. Third, there is New York of the person who was born somewhere else and came to New York in quest of something ….Commuters give the city its tidal restlessness, natives give it solidity and continuity, but the settlers give it passion.

Double Feature, Half the Price

I was having a shitty day.

It did not go as planned in any way, shape or form. My options for entertainment were limited, and it was hot.

The idea was thrown out there to go see a movie. I figured I’d go see Iron Man as I was meaning to see that anyway. The Incredible Hulk was mentioned as well.

So while looking them up I figured how I could scam the system and see both!

I went and saw the 7:05pm Iron Man and… infiltrated …the 9:20pm showing of The Incredible Hulk.

Iron Man, excellent movie. Robert Downey Jr. does a great job of portraying Tony Stark. It seems the arrogance needed to pull the role off came naturally to him. It is imperative that you stay all the way until the end of the credits as well, there’s a bit of an Easter Egg hidden there!

Now, having stayed until the absolute end (seriously, the other 15 people that were in the theater had left) this enabled me to casually walk out the door. And since none of the highly motivated teenage employees were around, I just strolled into the 9:20pm showing of The Incredible Hulk, which happened to be going through the now standard 10 minutes of commercials.

As for the Incredible Hulk, I liked it a lot. I never saw the Ang Lee version (due to the fact that I was told it was shit and from what little I saw made me believe that) so i could not compare the two unbiasedly. But this version is definitely good and worth seeing. Nods were given (as is standard in Comic book movies) to the necessary players; Bill Bixby (R.I.P.) was shown via a scene from an old TV movie he did, Lou Ferrigno played a security guard, and Stan Lee made his standard cameo. And the Easter Egg for this movie came at the end before the credits, so you don’t have to work so hard for it.

As for these Easter Eggs, let’s just say that there are three more movies that will tie together a final movie that is set to release in 2010. And if you’re paying attention, well, you’ll figure out what that movie will be! 😉

Some Clarification

Just so everyone knows, my Wife is the BEST WIFE EVER!

Even when sick, she slaves away washing my unmentionables and tidying up the mess I make when designing culinary delights.

She should be given an award and then thrust upon a pedestal so that we can all gaze upon her beautiful countenance and she can bestow upon us her loving wisdom.

Some Video Awesomeness

I wish this happened at my office:

I saw Iron Man and Hulk this weekend. After I got home, Spiderman was on TBS. A bit weird that I would stumble across this video about all three of them today:

This is what goes on in My Head

I walked into the bathroom at the office and was immediately assaulted by the smell of Oranges.

At first I thought “I wonder why it smells like oranges?”

And I thought “Well, at least it is better than smelling shit.”

And then I thought “Although, I do feel bad for the guy shitting oranges!”

Like Sands through the Hour Glass, my thoughts will trap you beneath their weight and slowly smother the life out of you…..
