In the story of the Ugly Ducking , when did the Ugly Duckling stop feeling Ugly? When he realized that he was a Swan. Each of us has something Special, a Swan of some sort, hidden inside somewhere. But until we recognize that it’s there, what can we do but splash around, treading water? The Wise are Who They Are. They work with what they’ve got and do what they can do.
There are things about ourselves that we need to get rid of; there are things we need to change. But at the same time, we do not need to be too desperate, too ruthless, too combative. Along the way to usefulness and happiness, many of those things will change themselves, and the others can be worked on as we go. The first thing we need to do is recognize and trust our own Inner Nature and not lose sight of it. For within the Ugly Duckling is the Swan, inside the Bouncy Tigger is the Rescuer who knows the Way, and in each of us is something Special, and that we need to keep.

This popped up on the blogosphere (god, I HATE that word) a few days ago. Looked like a viral video for some sort of game. Now iO9 is reporting that it is real, but no one can seem to agree on WHAT it is. And that it is inside a private property’s drainage system that the local government has no jurisdiction over. Awesome!
Maybe it’s the herald of something horrible.

Funny, if you were there, but you weren’t
Apparently M. Night Shyamalan is making a live action version of The Last Airbender, which was big with the kids and comic nerds apparently. I actually caught some of it one day while channel surfing, and it was pretty impressive.
Anyway, the guys at Penny Arcade have made a comic about it, and all the funny is in the first panel.
I had a laugh, so might you, but probably not, because you’re dead inside. And yes I do believe I abused the comma in that last sentence. You’re Welcome.

I am a gunslinger. I am an off planet leader of an unstoppable army with a terrible purpose. I am an Isreali spy. I am a boy wizard. I am a jedi. I am a drug addicted hacker.
I have watched my loved ones die. More times then I’d like to remember. I have seen empires rise and fall. I have fought the darkest of dark. I have seen the lightest of light. I have seen the internet from the inside, and spoken to it’s mind.
I am all these people, I have done all these things.
I don’t read books…..
I devour them!
If I like a book enough, it’d better be more than one thousand pages or it has three days or less before I am through it. And when I do read them, there best be more to come. My hunger for tales is insatiable.
Books are not my anti-drug, they ARE my drug. They are the drug of my mind. When I am long into a series, deep into the throws of the addiction, I yearn for the feeling of the beginning books. The thrill of the first story, the high of the adventure. And like any drug, you need more and more to get back less and less. There are mood swings, and anger. Moments of joy and the pain of having to continue. And the emptiness of the withdrawal when I am through. It’ll take days for me to stop seeing the antagonists in the real people around me. Weeks for me to stop thinking how a bit of magic, the drawing of a pistol, the hum of a lightsaber could and would solve a pressing issue, or right a wrong.

Movies That Define Us
For me, in high school and college, it was Dazed and Confused and Animal House.
When I went to work “For the MAN“ it was (and still is) Office Space.
I think I have found another movie that explains some of it all.
It is called Corpse Run.

Upon the top of Mt. Nerd, there is a spot that has a statue of me.
The other day I downloaded what might be the BEST iPhone App on Earth! It is called the Ligthsaber App. It’s basically an advertisement for the Force Unleashed video game, but it makes all the sound effects of a lightsaber using the movement sensors of the iPhone. Is there anything more awesome? I figure that the only way to make it even better would be to somehow wrap it in bacon…but that is idea to be explored later!
Upon downloading and demonstrating the app for the Wife, she shook her head in exasperation and said “I think I married the biggest nerd in the world”. I cannot disagree on that point!
But the story continues!
So there I am, laying in bed Sunday morning. I am in that hazy state between sleep and full alertness. My mind is beginning to shake out the cobwebs of slumber and begin its day. I am not sure if it was a dream the entire time, or my thoughts led into the dream, but when it was over even I was like ‘What the..!’
It starts out with me and another person ‘dueling’ our iPhone lightsabers. All of the sudden, after soundly defeating my opponent, a whole bunch of folks with Lightsaber iPhones show up to battle me.
So I instantly grab the Wife’s iPhone, download the app, and now I am DUEL WIELDING iPhone Lightsabers!!! On an Awesome Scale of 1 to 10 this was an 11!!
This is the point that I stir myself from my slumber and try to figure out if it was a dream or a convoluted train of thought….but it was a totally ‘WTF’ moment!
Only got more head shaking from the Wife when I told her…however, she does want the app now as well. I think I am winning her over….bit by bit. We’ll know that she has made the complete turn to the Nerd Side once she signs up for WoW!
And finally…F.O.I.L. DOES make a sound. Only one tuned to the intricacies of the Nerd can hear the soul soothing melody of a properly executed F.O.I.L. Method!
